Responsible Innovation Definitions, Practices, and Motivations from Nanotechnology Researchers in Food and Agriculture

Abstract The growth of responsible innovation (RI) scholarship has been mirrored by a proliferation RI definitions and practices, as well recognition the importance context for RI. This study investigates how researchers in field nanotechnology food agriculture (nano-agrifoods) define practice RI, what motivations they see pursuing We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with nano-agrifood from industry academia USA, where we asked them to describe their definitions, motivations. analyzed emergent themes these interviews, including aligned four prominent principles (anticipation, inclusion, reflexivity, responsiveness). found that largely focused descriptions around narrow envisioning principle anticipation — emphasizing product safety, efficacy, efficiency. also noteworthy tensions surrounding less frequently mentioned principles. For example, some envisioned inclusion way align products interests while others saw it public good. Concerning viewed protect one’s reputation avoid lawsuits improve human well-being solve societal problems. Given findings, future efforts foster within nano-agrifoods should promote discussions among concerning means responsibly innovate practices this could entail, particularly beyond ensuring
